The enclosed lifeguard tower between Brooklyn (3) and New York (4) was recently dedicated to longtime beachgoer and friend Cyndy Serpe. The Serpe’s who call Sea Girt their home helped the Beach Patrol with the donation of an additional enclosed Lifeguard Tower built in memory of their beloved Mom who passed away after her courageous battle with cancer.
Cyndy was a mainstay every day on the beach with her family and circle of friends enjoying the beaches of Sea Girt. Cyndy and her husband Ralph raised their three kids Derek, Samantha and Sloane on the beach every summer and we as lifeguards watched them grow up quickly. All three of them participated in the Junior Lifeguard Program for many years and Derek also serving the town and protecting the beaches as a Lifeguard for many years. The Serpe’s helped support and start the first year of our JG program in 1997 and many other items over the years to help the Beach Patrol.
When Cyndy passed, the family could think of no better way to honor their mother than with a “permanent” fixture along the beach as well as benefitting public safety. The dedication of the Cyndy Serpe Lifeguard Tower was enjoyed by friends and family on a hot July Sunday morning and the Sea Girt Beach Patrol is most appreciative of the Serpe’s friendship and support over the years.
Our enclosed Lifeguard Towers along the beachfront serve as a place of supervision of the beachfront and ocean by Lifeguards and Lifeguard Supervisors. The Lifeguards are protected from the weather when assigned to these towers and many times in bad weather or in the beginning or end of the season these towers are the only ones open and in operation.
Feel free to stop and see how these enclosed towers serve the Sea Girt beachgoers, we will be happy to show them to you. We currently have three of them – one between Brooklyn and New York, one at the Surfing Beach at Philadelphia Blvd and one at the South end of town towards Seaside and Sea Girt Ave (our South End surfing beach)
Thank you again to the Serpe family for their generosity.
